Q&A with Miss Cook: Spreading Kindness at Leopold Primary
Whether she’s coordinating breakfast for students, leading the Kind Kids Club, or playing futsal on a Tuesday night, Miss Cook brings energy, compassion, and a deep sense of purpose to everything she does. With 24 years of teaching experience and a heart for wellbeing, she’s become a beloved figure at Leopold Primary—and a true champion of kindness in the wider community. We sat down with Miss Cook to learn more about her journey, her passions, and the impact she’s making every day.
Q: What is your current role at Leopold Primary?
Miss Cook: I’m the Wellbeing, Breakfast Club, and Kind Kids Club Coordinator. My role is all about supporting students in ways that go beyond the classroom—whether it’s making sure they start the day with a good meal, helping them build emotional resilience, or encouraging them to spread kindness through our community initiatives.
Q: How long have you been a teacher?
Miss Cook: I’ve been teaching for 24 years. I started out in upper primary classrooms, mainly teaching Grades 5 and 6, and later moved into specialist roles in PE, ICT, and Health across Prep to Grade 6. While I’ve loved every stage of my teaching journey, my current role in Wellbeing is definitely my favourite. It allows me to connect with students in meaningful ways and support their growth both emotionally and socially.
Q: What inspired you to become a teacher?
Miss Cook: I originally studied a Bachelor of Education with a major in Outdoor Education, aiming for a career in Physical Education. But once I started classroom teaching, I fell in love with it. Over time, I branched out into specialist areas, and eventually found my calling in Wellbeing. It’s incredibly rewarding to help students feel safe, supported, and empowered.
Q: Do you have a favourite memory since becoming a teacher?
Miss Cook: There are so many, but developing the Kind Kids Club stands out as a true highlight. It’s created countless rewarding moments and built strong connections with students, families, and the wider community. One of the most touching experiences was receiving feedback from a shopper at Gateway Plaza who was moved by our students’ kindness. Her daughter was about to attend a job interview, and the students’ thoughtful gesture made her day—and yes, she got the job! Moments like that remind me how powerful kindness can be.
Q: What do you love about the Leopold and Gateway Plaza community?
Miss Cook: The support we receive for our Kind Kids Club visits is incredible. Seeing our students interact with shoppers, hand out small gifts, and brighten someone’s day is so fulfilling. The gratitude we get from the community—like the heartfelt emails we’ve received—makes it all worthwhile. It’s a beautiful reminder of how small acts of kindness can ripple out and make a big impact.
Q: What do you love to do in your free time?
Miss Cook: I love spending time with my two girls, especially when the weather’s nice and we can head to the beach. I also play cricket during the summer and I’ve recently started playing futsal on Tuesday nights in Geelong. Staying active is a big part of my life and helps me recharge.
Q: What’s your favourite food?
Miss Cook: I’m definitely more of a savoury person! My top three favourites would have to be roast lamb (especially when my mum cooks it—it’s always better!), steak with garlic prawns, and a classic spaghetti bolognaise. I’m not big on sweets, but I’ll never say no to a good savoury dish.
Q: Coffee, tea, or hot chocolate?
Miss Cook: Oh, definitely coffee—a latte with one sugar is my go-to. It’s the perfect way to start the day!
Q: If you could give your younger self one piece of advice, what would it be?
Miss Cook: Keep being active—whether it’s going for a walk, playing sport, or catching up with friends. And most importantly, be kind to yourself. Self-care isn’t just a buzzword; it’s essential.
